Our Impact

When Opportunity Nation publicly launched in 2011, expanding opportunity was not a national priority. Today, elected officials, journalists, CEOs and presidential candidates have stepped up and taken notice.

The urgent need to increase educational opportunity and economic mobility now dominates local, state and national agendas.Through the work of our diverse coalition, the Opportunity Index and the National Opportunity Summit, we stimulate constructive conversation, advance issues and bring together unlikely allies to restore the American Dream. Explore some examples of our impact below.

  • Mobilized the Opportunity Community

We’ve built a national network of more than 300 partners who reach 100+ million people annually. Together, this cross-sector coalition works to forge solutions, elevate issues and advocate change. Opportunity Nation hosts regional and national convenings; organizes advocacy days on Capitol Hill; and supports state initiatives like Opportunity Iowa.

  • Jumpstarted the Opportunity Conversation

We created a first-of-its-kind tool, the Opportunity Index, which has sparked research, national awareness and grassroots activism. The annual Opportunity Index release has attracted widespread national media coverage by the Associated Press, U.S. News & World Report, CNN Money, MSNBC, FOX News, the Today Show and more.

  • Pushed major federal policy changes

We’ve advanced policy and legislation to create multiple paths to prosperity for young adults and promoted bipartisanship by getting elected officials to work together across the aisle. In 2014, we worked to pass the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, the bipartisan and bicameral reauthorization of the Workforce Investment Act.
