In October 2013, Opportunity Nation launched the 2013 Opportunity Index. The release was featured in an Associated Press story that was picked up more than 200 times, and in a 25-page package and cover story in Washington Monthly magazine.
The 2013 Opportunity Index release brought national attention to the devastating youth disconnection crisis in the United States, where nearly 6 million young people are neither in school nor working. The shocking statistic that 15 percent of young adults ages 16-24 are disconnected from meaningful education and career pathways stimulated a national discussion on how we can help youth achieve their American Dream.
Within five days, the Opportunity Index release had generated more than 972,547,912 media impressions.
- More than 325 broadcast outlets discussed the story.
- More than 119 spin-off articles were published.
- One online copy of the initial AP story received over 5500 user comments and another version generated nearly 700 tweets in one week.
