Opportunity Index Press Coverage

In October 2013, Opportunity Nation launched the 2013 Opportunity Index. The release was featured in an Associated Press story that was picked up more than 200 times, and in a 25-page package and cover story in Washington Monthly magazine.

The 2013 Opportunity Index release brought national attention to the devastating youth disconnection crisis in the United States, where nearly 6 million young people are neither in school nor working. The shocking statistic that 15 percent of young adults ages 16-24 are disconnected from meaningful education and career pathways stimulated a national discussion on how we can help youth achieve their American Dream.

  • More than 119 spin-off articles were published.
  • One online copy of the initial AP story received over 5500 user comments and another version generated nearly 700 tweets in one week.
