Opportunity is Who we Are: Our State of the Union Response•
During last night’s State of the Union address, President Barack Obama unequivocally declared: “Opportunity is who we are.”
This was an incredible moment for all of our work together at Opportunity Nation.
We want to thank you for helping to push this issue to the forefront of the national agenda. This conversation didn’t claim center stage five years ago. Even a year ago, this wasn’t dominating headlines and major speeches. And now, President Obama has made Opportunity Nation’s goal to “expand opportunity for more American families,” the collective mission of our nation.
This didn’t happen by accident.
So, yes, this moment means a lot to us. But even more important is what it means for our diverse coalition and the 100 million Americans they work for everyday.
Our fight for our nation’s young people isn’t over–not by a long-shot. But we’re happy that these initiatives to increase apprenticeships, match skills training to available work and connect students to colleges and careers, for which we have all fought long and hard, are getting the national attention they deserve.
