Our work is more important than ever

by Opportunity Nation   •

As the election comes to a close with a new president-elect, we implore our leaders to begin the processes of bringing the country together and to work on the most important challenges facing our nation, like the widening opportunity gap. Our work is more important than ever; it will require every sector and every citizen to commit to finding common ground and acting on common sense solutions that will ensure every citizen has access to the American Dream.

During our September National Opportunity Summit, Opportunity Nation and its Coalition released a plan, Our Opportunity Nation. The plan presents for the president, Congress and local policymakers, six Opportunity Millennium Goals and policy recommendations that are evidence-based, bipartisan and cross-sector to increase opportunity in communities across the nation. We all must now prioritize this work. We hope President-elect Trump will commit to ensuring children and young adults get the right start to succeed in the 21st century economy.

Stagnating wages, double-digit youth unemployment, a skills gap and rising income inequality threaten a core tenet of our country: no matter your origins, if you work hard and persevere, you have a fair shot at improving your life. We recognize that there is no one singular path nor one dream for all. But the circumstances of your birth should not dictate how successful you are. The stakes are too high. Let’s now use this time to focus on uniting our country and closing the opportunity gap. America’s children and young adults are counting on it.

Opportunity Nation Opportunity Nation is a bipartisan, national campaign comprised of more than 350 cross-sector organizations working together to expand economic mobility and close the opportunity gap in America. Opportunity Nation envisions the United States as a nation where everyone – regardless of where they were born – has equal access to opportunity, economic mobility, and success at all stages of life.
